A 4-Hour Workshop for Exploring Composition, Layering, and Mixed Media Play
It’s time to turn your gel prints into stunning mixed media collages! In this 4-hour workshop, we’ll explore the fundamentals of collage—composition, contrast, balance, and storytelling— while using your handmade papers as the main material. This class is perfect for beginners and creatives of all levels who want to loosen up, experiment, and develop their visual voice through paper layering and intuitive design.
🟡 Warm-Up & Composition Basics
• Brief review of collage principles: focal point, balance, contrast, unity
• Warm-up exercises: creating small abstract 4”x 6” “sketch collages”
• Using a limited color palette to build confidence and cohesion
🔵 Building Your Final Collage Piece
• Create one or two 8”x10” collages using your gel prints
• Optional elements: incorporate drawing, stamping, or focal imagery
• Use matte medium to adhere pieces with a clean finish
• Tips for finishing edges, sealing, and displaying your work
🟣 Final Touches & Sharing
• Add final details with pencil, pen, or stamps and ink for emphasis and movement
• Group sharing: talk about your process and discoveries
• Optional: mount or mat your favorite collage for presentation
🧰 Supply List
• Extra gel prints and painted papers for variety
• A selection of hand made gel plate prints
• Scissors and/or tearing rulers
• Matte Medium (Golden brand is recommended)
• At least 4 sheets of sturdy substrate (8”x10” or similar size) such as: Watercolor paper, Bristol board, Mixed media paper, Small canvas panels or wood boards
• Paint brushes to apply medium
• Paper Towels and water bucket
• Optional: Apron or smock, pens, pencils, paint pens, washi tape, stamps and ink or ephemera for details
MDCA and the Christine will be able to supply some of these supplies but bring what you have!
