Adding Wildlife into Atmospheric Lake/Marsh Paintings
April 22 & 23, 2023 / 10AM-3PM / Instructor: Shawn Dell Joyce Make breathtaking paintings with dramatic light and color like sunset and marsh/lake scenes, then add wildlife (birds, gators, etc) and learn to Match the lighting to make it look like they were there all along! Work from supplied photos to create an atmospheric painting, then choose which critter you want to include. Make value sketches and color studies to plan how the light will wrap around the forms, and create a finished, polished painting. Work from supplied references, individual and group attention. Open to all media, demonstrations in pastel. Materials: Shawn uses Mount Vision pastels along with Rembrandt and some Senellier and Pastels Girault on Ampersand Pastelbord. All participants will get samples of materials to take home, courtesy of the manufacturers. In addition, bring two large surfaces 16x20 or 18x24 to paint on, your favorite media (oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic) a sketchbook and pencil, eraser and a washcloth or paper towels. Day 1: Setting the stage · 10am Introductions · 10:30 Choosing your subjects · 11am demo value sketching and light logic · Value sketch of your painting · Noon lunch break · 12:30 demo of a color study using complementary color palette · 1 color study and lay-out palette for painting · 2pm group critique · 2:30pm sketch surface for painting
Day 2: Making the painting · 10am demo of laying in the big abstract shapes of the background · 10:30 start painting by simplifying colors into blocks · 11 am demo – start refining big shapes and adding light source · 11:30 refine and add light source · 12: lunch break · 12:30 demo in adding wildlife- how erase out where wildlife will be, sketch it in or transfer the shape. · 1-3pm add wildlife and paint it to match lighting in setting · 3pm group critique
